How much is too much?
October 30, 2015
On Oct. 27, 2015, a video of a police officer using excessive force with a Spring Valley High School student reached the internet. As one could imagine, people were outraged at the amount of violence and force that this officer used on this young girl. The officer, who has been identified as Ben Fields, has lost his job since this incident and could be facing additional charges. Some South Carolina officials are demanding that the Department of Justice look into this video for fear that it has to do with race (the officer in question is white while the young girl is black).
Per many news reports, Deputy Fields is a very large male who works out frequently and is a football coach at the school. Multiple news outlets have also reported that Fields has been accused of using excessive force in the past and has been accused of racial bias.
Currently, Fields is in the middle of a law suit that was filed by a former Spring Valley student that claimed Fields unfairly uses a racial bias to accuse African American students of being affiliated with gangs and criminal activity.
The video shows Officer Fields approaching the desk of the young girl. Once the girl refuses to move, she is forcibly yanked by her collar and dragged out of the desk and subsequently handcuffed. The video then pans the classroom, which shows everyone in the room frozen in shock and completely still. The young girl, whose name has not been released, is said to have sustained serious injuries that require her to wear a cast.
After this video, the amount of force that police officers use has been called into question, but so has civilian behavior. Some people are justifying the amount of force that Officer Fields used because they believe that it was his right once the girl did not comply with his orders. It is believed that Officer Fields was called to the classroom after the teacher and a school administrator were unable to get the girl out of the classroom. However, other people are saying that no matter the issue, this was too much violence and it proves that some police officers like to abuse their power and take matters too far.
