On September 24th, First Presbyterian hosted PC students for church service and a meal.
To start off the morning, our very own President of PC, Dr. Anita Gustafson. Her message included the traditions and values of Presbyterian College. A key takeaway from this special message included striving to create a community where we treat each other with grace and respect.
At First Presbyterian, there is a segment of worship called “Time With Young Disciples.” This is a time when the young children, elementary aged and younger, come down to the front of the pulpit and are taught something that follows the main message. This Sunday, the story followed the disciple Samuel. As the story goes, Samuel kept falling asleep in the church’s sanctuary and hearing a voice calling out to him. This voice turned out to be the voice of God telling Samuel he had great plans for him.
The Reverend Dr. Buz Wilcoxon led the church service;as did the Lassiter Chaplin and Dean of Spiritual Life at PC. The service included the message “Called to Serve” and lessons from Ephesians 4:1-13, calling back to the Young Disciples lesson. A phrase that kept appearing was from Ephesians, “Lead a Life worthy of the calling to which you have been called” and “[It’s] not IF you are called, but HOW.
The whole service was filled with amazing musical artists. Lending beautiful and angelic melodies were flutist Tonya Warren and chelloist Daniel Martens. They are part of PC’s musical departments and added to the magic of music. The PC Choir sang several songs to greet the congregation and several songs throughout the service. Of these “I Will Sing with the Spirit” By John Rutter is the most memorable, partly because of the beautiful songs and partly because Dr. Elser made a last-minute appearance to conduct the choir and accompanying soloists.
