Every Saturday during the month of October, Thornwell’s Lush Acres Farm has a fall festival. At this festival, there are many activities. There are food trucks, a corn maze, corn cannons, animal viewings, a tractor ride, and a market!
The corn maze was a lot of fun! Be prepared to go through 30 minutes of dead-ends and circles and laughter as you try to find the exit. While going through the maze, you can enjoy the apple cider donuts that were being sold just outside the entrance. They were delicious! There were lots of different animals: alpacas, pigs, cows, goats, and a rabbit. The market (which is open year round) has a variety of jams, candles, and more. The candles are all hand-poured and smelled divine. I even bought 2 myself as PC students receive a 15% off discount in the market!
While walking around, I spoke with Kurt Furman, a worker here at the Lush Acres Farm. Lush Acres Farm has now been producing meat, eggs, and other produce for 3 years now. Kurt says the festivals are a way to bring in the community, share the story of what Thornwell is doing with helping families in need, and to generate revenue to keep the program sustainable. His following statement was, “Of course, it reiterates into the mission of creating a great environment for families to come and enjoy themselves.”
The farm itself has been farming for over 100 years! The proceeds that come from the farm go directly into Thornwell to allow them to continue their services and mission.
If you missed it, they also host a spring festival on April 15th, from 10am-5pm.
