When it comes to achievements, nothing can make us prouder than to see one of our own succeed – much like Presbyterian College’s very own Dr. Kendra Y. Hamilton! She has had her book, Romancing the Gullah in the Age of Porgy and Bess, published.
I attended her reception for the book, and I can say that the presentation was immaculate. You can see how much effort she put into it, as well as all the hard work she put into informing us about the cultural history of the Gullah Geechee Coast.
One of the most powerful aspects of the book is that it offers a voice to the voiceless, especially when detailing the hidden aspects and histories of the Gullah region. From the connections of the Great Migration to the Harlem and Charleston Renaissance, this book serves to fill in the gap of information left behind and unfounded by other people and opens our eyes to a new world of understanding.
