On Wednesday, January 8, the Presbyterian Women’s Basketball Team took on Upstate at our very own Templeton Gym. There was also a celebration for the lovely faculty and staff at Presbyterian College, who helped contribute to student-athletes success, whether it’s on or off the field.
This was the first game that I saw here at Presbyterian, so I felt like it was appropriate for me to see the women in action. The stage was set as the game started at 6:30 pm, and just like that, it began.
Now, unfortunately, things didn’t start so well, as the Upstate team showed paramount levels of teamwork and leadership, and slowly managed to gain a steady lead over Presbyterian. However, our Blue Hoses didn’t give up! They were just biting at their heels to tie the score.
That’s when things started getting bad, as Upstate soon managed to keep up their score and surpassed it even further; by the time halfway through the game was over, Upstate managed to have a 17-point difference with no signs of stopping.
Now I would be lying if I said that I started losing hope that the team would catch up, much less pull a victory. Upstate seemed to be carrying on the lead at a steady pace, and there isn’t anything that anyone can do about it. Most people would give up, and they would be right to do so, but not our team! They kept going and kept faith that they could pull it off…
Then, a miracle happened. In the second half, slowly but surely, they managed to catch up so much that in the final quarter of the game, they barely managed to get behind Upstate with a score of 57 to 58. Then, the free throws happened. With one throw, the ball hit the rim, bounced forward, and landed in the net! The crows cheered as they managed to tie up the game to an even 58 to 58!
Needless to say, the tension could be felt everywhere as we see them make one final shot, with one thing in mind: can they make it?
The ball went up, sailed over the hoop, and nothing but net! Presbyterian was now in the lead! After the free throws, Upstate managed to get the ball and tried to get back their lead, but one player bumped into one of our own, dropping the ball and making it bounce on the ground as the sound of the buzzer echoed through the court and inside our heads.
We looked to the blackboard for the final score… Presbyterian won with a score of 59 to 58!!
The crowd cheered as we saw a miracle happen in real life, and the team showed us the power of never giving up till it’s over. After attending this game, you can bet that I’ll be attending many more games to come, hoping for something like this to happen again!
