Super Bowl Sunday can either be the greatest or most defeating day of a football fan’s life. For our Chiefs fans and Eagles fans, this past Sunday, February 9, turned out to be an oddly thrilling game, in a not-so thrilling way. At 6:30 pm, the Kansas City Chiefs went up against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The two teams had gone head-to-head before in Super Bowl LVII, two years before yesterday, resulting in a tight 38 to 35 Kansas City Chiefs win over the Birds. This long-awaited rematch had Eagles fans yearning for their turn at the title. Meanwhile, the Chiefs nation was hoping to see their team bring them to victory, which would have them making history as the first three-peat Super Bowl champions.
A lot was riding on this game for both sides of the ball. The game kicked off and the rowdy crowds began, the anxieties sunk in, and the football fun commenced. With 6:15 to go in the first quarter, the Philadelphia Eagles landed the first touchdown of the game. Neither team scored the rest of the quarter, leaving the result of this game still up in the air.
As we entered the second quarter, the Eagles then scored a field goal, making the score 0-10, Birds in the lead. Chiefs fans were still optimistic about their chance to win.
If there was any player on the Chiefs that the opponent needed to keep their eyes on coming into the game, it was Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs starting quarterback. Mahomes was a force to be reckoned with in their last duel on the field, but this time around, it seemed the Eagles’ defense was well prepared for what they were up against, causing Mahomes and the Chiefs offense to struggle to find success for far more than half of the game.
It wasn’t until there was 2:40 left of the third quarter that Mahomes was able to pull his game back together and assist the Chiefs offense in getting some numbers up on the board. At this point, the score was an astounding 6-34, Eagles still taking the lead.
Chiefs fans began to falter in their faith as the Eagles scored another field goal to kick off the last quarter of the game and the score was now 6-40, Eagles. By this time, Bird Nation knew they had the victory in the bag. Fans were devastated, but Philadelphia and all of its people were roaring at the result of this game. The Chiefs were able to score two more touchdowns in the last eight minutes of the game, ending with a score of 22-40, Eagles defeating the two-time defending Super Bowl champs.
Ultimately it seemed to have come down to the battle of the quarterbacks, as we see Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, the Eagles’ quarterback, needing to make the necessary plays to get the ball in the end zone. While Mahomes appeared to be off his usual performance, Hurts was able to play a smooth game, earning himself the Super Bowl MVP title and helping his team find their way to victory.
Unfortunately for the Kansas City Chiefs, no history was made, but for the Philadelphia Eagles, the sweet win of Super Bowl LIX now reigns and soars in Bird Nation until next year.
