Many people were laughing and in a competitive mood because of the battles that were taking place on the lawn in front of GDH on Tuesday, April 15. The said battles were just competitions between 4 different teams (red, blue, green, and orange). The ending prize was that of free Italian ice for the winning team. There were 3 competitions (as well as an additional one for some players). Those three were jousting, slip n’ slide kickball, and a watermelon-eating contest, and the additional one was trying to avoid the dousing of the random water bucket coming around during the kickball game.
Jousting was a simple concept that included an inflatable jousting ring with inflatable jousting sticks. There would be a person from each team selected and there would be an immediate loss for a team if they refused to put on the protective gear for the game. There would be two people in the ring, and they would each have to be standing up on the circle/mount in the middle of the ring. They would have to attack each other with the jousting stick until one of them had at least one foot off of the mount.
Slip n’ slide kickball consisted of 4 slip n’ slides that were positioned in a manner similar to a baseball field. There was soap and water on all 4 of the said slides, and there was a miniature/kiddie pool at the end filled up with water also. One would have to kick the ball rolled by the pitcher and slide/run to the pool end of the slip n’ slide and get at least one foot or hand in the pool. There would be refills on the amount of water and soap poured onto the slip n’ slides by others since a player may get soaked/absorb all the water, to where they look as if they came out of the washer a bit too early.
The watermelon-eating contest was the last competition and one team had to volunteer 4 people to compete. It was watched over by Dr. Meadows. The winner of this competition won against all of the other teams and would win free Italian ice.
All in all, the Blue Hose field day was exciting and fun and allowed for students to take a break/breather, as well as experience something new on campus and collaborate and meet with other students.
