Lady Hose Fall to Winthrop Eagles 56-47

The Presbyterian College women’s basketball team suffered a 56-47 defeat at home to the Winthrop Eagles Saturday evening in Templeton. The Hose were outscored 28-12 in the paint and allowed a 50 percent shooting average from the Eagles.

Winthrop jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead early in the first half. The Blue Hose rallied back getting a quick bucket from Karlee Taylor and a three pointer from Amanda Mills. The lady Blue Hose jostled for position with the Eagles all night and eventually gained a 3 point lead right before the half. The Hose would take a 24-21 lead into halftime against the Eagles.

The Eagles battled back in the second half and their momentum pushed them to a 7 point lead with a little over 7 minutes remaining. The lady Blue Hose would fight back but the solid free throw shooting of the Eagles solidified their defeat.

Winthrop went 21- 43 on the night shooting nearly 49 percent. PC did not do quite as well, shooting 15-49 on the night at 30 percent. However, PC shot 6-16 from behind the arc while Winthrop only shot 2-7.

The Winthrop Eagles were lead by TaQuoia Hammick who recorded a double-double (16 points/11 rebounds). Hammick also had a pair of blocks that helped the Eagles hold the lead over the Blue Hose. Dequesha McClanahan added 14 points and with six of which being points scored off of three pointers. The Blue Hose were lead by Dria David who logged 11 points off 4-7 shooting. Karlee Taylor contributed 10 points to the Blue Hose effort off 3-5 shooting.

Winthrop improved to 12-12 (.500) on the season and 5-6 in the Big South. PC fell to an 8-17 record on the season and 4-8 in the Big South. The lady Blue Hose will host the Charleston Southern Monday night at 7 P.M. Monday’s contest will serve as senior night and seniors Amanda Mills and Chelsea Wright will be honored for their hard work and dedication to the program.
