The Blue Hose started this game by kicking off to Virginia-Lynchburg. Throughout the first quarter, the Blue Hose defense held VUL to 0 points while scoring 3 from a 21 yard field goal made by Mack Mikko.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Blue Hose defense forced VUL to punt after a three play drive. Carter Szydlowski blocked this punt and helped give PC’s offense a better starting field position. This led to sophomore quarterback Tyler Wesley throwing a 59 yard touchdown to sophomore Dominic Kibby. Mack Mikko followed this touchdown with a successful PAT. Things seemed to be going downhill as VUL scored a touchdown, recovered a fumble, and made a field goal to tie the game. After a 16 play drive and no score, Mack Mikko made a field goal to put the Blue Hose up 13-10. With one minute to go in the first half, Caleb Francis intercepted a pass from the VUL quarterback and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown, the first defensive touchdown of the season. At the end of the first half, Presbyterian had the lead with a score of 20-10.
PC’s offense didn’t have a good start to the third quarter. A blocked punt by VUL that was recovered and scored put them back into the game. After the PAT, the score was 20-17. After a weather delay, it seemed as if PC kicked things into another gear. The Blue Hose came out and went on three offensive drives in a row, ending in touchdowns with scores from Cincere Gill, Tyler Wesley, and Domonic Kibby, as well as three PATs from Mack Mikko. Presbyterian’s defense denied VUL any more points during the 3rd quarter, making the score 41-17.
With 4:56 left in the game, quarterback Ty Englehart threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Dylan Boone. It was followed by a PAT from Mack Mikko. This and the fourth-quarter shutout from the Blue Hose defense sealed the game and secured the 48-17 home opener win for PC.
The Blue Hose return to Bailey Memorial Stadium on Saturday, October 7th, at 1:00 p.m. to take on the Stetson Hatters.
