This past weekend (October 17th to the 19th) was Homecoming Weekend, and the campus was bustling with many activities all around. It was hard to miss all the excitement and energy buzzing around campus from students, staff, and alumni alike.
Among these exciting activities were games from our numerous sports teams. Our football team defended their win streak against Stetson University, taking the game with a win of 42-7. Our men’s basketball team traveled to Clemson, where they played in an exhibition. Men’s tennis traveled to Cary, North Carolina, for regionals at ITA Carolina, and women’s tennis traveled to Chapel Hill for their ITA regional championships.
However, our women’s volleyball team was working extra hard, hosting two back-to-back games this weekend. On Friday they hosted Gardner-Webb, winning that match 3 sets to none, and on Saturday they hosted Winthrop, where they unfortunately lost 0 sets to three.
Friday night’s game against Gardner-Webb was a sweep. Both the offensive and defensive players were on their A game, as seen by the stats. Our Blue Hose brought in a total of 47 kills thanks to our big three leaders. Julia Yurkovich led the pack with a total of 15 kills during the match, hitting at 0.375; Ashley Miller was second with 9 kills during the match, hitting at 0.286; and Brittney Daphnis had 7 kills during the match, hitting at 0.333. As for blocks, Brittney Daphnis, Courtney Williams, and Anisa Dorlouis held down the front line with 6, 5, and 2 blocks, respectively, for a total of 9 blocks throughout the match. The back row stats are just as impressive, with a total of 53 digs. Our back row stars for this match were Aubrie Arnold with 17 digs, Anisa Dorlouis with 12 digs, and Amaris Alvarez with 6 digs. As for assists, Anisa Dorlouis racked up a total of 37 assists this match, followed by Amaris Alvarez and Aubrie Arnold with three assists apiece. Wrapping up the back row stats with aces, the Blue Hose served a total of 4 aces this match. Amaris Alvarez served 2 aces, with Sophia Del Valle and Brittney Daphnis serving one ace each.
However, even though Saturday night’s game wasn’t a win, these ladies worked hard. In this match a total of 34 kills were scored. Julia Yurkovich led the pack again with a total of 10 kills, hitting at 0.182, with Anisa Dorlouis scoring 6 kills and hitting at 0.294, and Courtney Williams also scoring 6 kills, hitting at 0.357. As for blocks, Elyse Hutchinson, Brittney Daphnis, and Courtney Williams held down the front line this time, with Hutchinson and Daphnis being tied at 4 blocks apiece and Williams with 2 blocks for a total of 8 blocks this match. The back row put in the work this match, with a total of 35 digs. Anisa Dorlouis leads the pack in this game with 11 digs, followed by Aubrie Arnold with 7 digs and Celimar Hoyos with 4 digs. As for assists, Anisa Dorlouis continues to lead in the number of assists, setting a total of 24 assists this match. She’s followed by Aubrie Arnold with six assists and Sophia Del Valle with two assists. As for aces, Brittney Daphnis, Sophia Del Valle, and Celimar Hoyos were fierce at the serving line, with 3, 1, and 1 for a total of 6 aces in this match.
The Blue Hose women’s volleyball team is hosting two games this weekend as well, with UNC Asheville being on Friday the 24th and USC Upstate on Saturday the 25th. If you have time, you should go cheer our girls on!
